trouble completing & remembering tasks
Why is this a challenge and how can you help?
Students with ADHD often struggle to complete tasks in the classroom and at home. It is important to help students break up tasks into manageable chunks, create organizational systems to help them structure their work time, and help them set measurable and attainable goals.
Tips
Break up tasks into manageable chunks or create a flow chart with specific individual steps.
Visualization of “what is will feel/look/be like when you are done”
Reward/Accountability system
Use visual planners - pictures using actual items for younger students
Mind-mapping vs lists (great for building ideas and organizing thoughts for non-traditional thinkers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCyjFipytRE
Help students with metacognition in the classroom.
GOAL SETTING - Small, MEASURABLE goals
Focus on resilience: What went well? What was challenging? What might you do the next time? How will you know?
Verbalizing with student how they plan to remember – “What might you need to help you remember?” or “How will you remember to xyz?” Determine tools to use, help needed, and how they want to be reminded should the forget.
